NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Monday issued notices to the Union Government, the Delhi Government and the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on a petition by the residents’ welfare associations of some South Delhi colonies opposing construction of an elevated Metro railway line between Central Secretariat and Badarpur. The petitioners opposed construction of the elevated line on the ground that it would infringe upon their privacy and cause noise pollution. A Division Bench of the Court comprising Justice T. S. Thakur and Justice Veena Birbal directed the respondents to file their replies to the concerns raised in the petition by the residents. The petition will be taken up for hearing in December. While issuing notices, the Bench observed that it did appear from the facts of the petition that the elevated link might cause noise pollution and disturb the privacy of the residents. The Bench asked why the DMRC was deviating from its motto of providing an underground transport service to the residents of the Capital. The proposed elevated link will pass through Greater Kailash, Defence Colony, Lajpat Nagar, Kailash Colony, Jungpura, Kalkaji and other areas of the city. The residents of colonies between Jangpura and Kalkaji also expressed their apprehension that the proposed link would damage the green cover in their areas, in addition to adding to the noise pollution.
