Old woman dies of shock after robbery incident Crime notes

BANGALORE: An elderly woman died of shock after an armed gang of dacoits looted cash and valuables from her house and snatched her gold ornaments on Sunday night.

The police said the incident took place around 8 p.m. at retired teacher K.V. Byranna’s secluded house at Jakkanahalli Cross on Thymagondalu Road, off National Highway 4, in Nelamangala police station limits. Six men knocked on the doors of Byranna’s farmhouse.

After his wife Lakkamma (70) opened the door, the dacoits threatened her and looted Rs. 9,000 cash and gold ornaments from the house. Lakkamma collapsed after the dacoits snatched her gold chains and earrings before fleeing. After Byranna shouted for help, his neighbours opened the door which was latched from outside and rushed Lakkamma to a hospital. She was declared brought dead. She had apparently died of shock, the police said. The Nelamangala police have registered a case.

Kidnappers held

The West division police have arrested a six-member gang that had allegedly kidnapped a youth on November 14 and demanded a ransom of Rs. 5 lakh from his father.

After learning that the police were on the lookout for them, the kidnappers had left Suresh (24), a fruit merchant, near Shanthinagar burial ground on November 16, the police said.

Subsequently, the police arrested the accused and recovered from them Suresh’s mobile phone and ATM card. They were identified as Senthil Kumar (27) of Cottonpet, T. Umesh Babu (2) of Adugodi Police Quarters, V. Suresh Babu alias Appu (34) of Parvathipura and Yosuf (27), Arun Kumar (19) and Gopi (28), all residents of Wilson Garden.

Suresh Babu, a murder accused, who was in financial problems, had plotted the kidnap with the other accused to make quick money, the police said.

Killed

R.V. Sommanna Gouder (53), a traffic controller of BMTC, was killed in a hit-and-run case reported from Residency Road on Sunday night.

The police said that around 9 p.m. a vehicle knocked down Gouder while he was crossing the Residency Road, near Bangalore Club, and sped away.
