Haneef: AFP seeks time

Mohamed Haneef

Melbourne: The Australian Federal Police, under fire for its incompetent handling of Indian doctor Mohammed Haneef’s case, has sought more time to publicly answer questions posed to it by the top legal body of the country.

The Law Council of Australia has written to the AFP for answers on a series of questions about the handling of the case, according to The Age.

The Council said it had not received a response in regard to Mr. Haneef’s case. But the AFP on Monday said it had replied to the Council.

Mr. Haneef was cleared of terror charges after being arrested in connection with the foiled U.K. bombings earlier this year.

“The Australian Federal Police has twice written to the Law Council of Australia in response to the Council’s letter about the conduct of the AFP during the Haneef case,” AFP spokesman Scott Kelleher said.

He said because the Haneef case was still before the Federal Court, it was not possible to fully answer the council’s questions. — PTI
