Rallies and rush hour

Political rallies or show-of-strength rallies are a dime a dozen in the State capital on most days. Whenever there is a procession, the first thing that happens is a traffic jam, a massive vehicle gridlock that does not even spare the narrow bylanes.

Things get particularly messy during the evening rush hours when school buses ferry children home and office-goers begin to leave for home.

There are days when rallies begin from near the MLA hostel and wind their way to East Fort. Every crossing point on the main road from Palayam to East Fort gets blocked. Even the underpass is not spared. .

On Tuesday, this is exactly what happened. School buses were caught in traffic jams, the Bakery Junction resembled a huge parking lot and motorists went this way and that looking for a road with blocks. But then, it was yet another ‘normal’ day in Thiruvananthapuram.
