Motihari: Asserting that his Government has ushered in a new era of progress and development in Bihar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday said he would present a report card on its performance on completion of its two years in office on November 24. “The NDA Government has ushered in a new era of progress and development in Bihar which will be visible in every nook and corner of the State during its remaining term in office. If it is not visible on the ground, I will not seek a fresh mandate from the people,” he told a public meeting here after inaugurating development projects worth Rs.1,287 crore for East Champaran district. Referring to the floods in the State this year, Mr. Kumar said nature had thrown a big challenge but the State Government responded to it promptly and launched massive relief and rescue efforts with full honesty and transparency. Observing that construction of high dams on rivers originating in upper reaches of Nepal could go a long way in tackling recurrent floods in the State, he said no government could claim to put an end to floods but definitely mitigate the sufferings of the people. Mr. Kumar said the State Government had submitted a Rs.11,000 crore proposal to the Centre for inter-linking of rivers and their desiltation to find a lasting solution to the problems of flood and drought. The Government, he said, had also submitted a Rs.4,200 crore proposal to the Centre for reconstruction of the houses and infrastructure damaged during the floods. Mr. Kumar expressed satisfaction over the harmony prevailing in Bihar under the NDA dispensation. “There is no communal or caste tension anywhere in the State. Those who presided over the destiny of Bihar before us clung to power by whipping up caste and communal conflicts,” he said without naming anybody. Maintaining that his Government was committed to social, political and economic empowerment of the weaker sections, Mr. Kumar said 50 per cent reservation for women and 20 per cent for extremely backward classes in panchayati raj institutions was a step in that direction. UniversityHe announced setting up of a university at Motihari to be named after Mahatma Gandhi. Earlier, Mr. Kumar laid the foundation stone for a Rs.83 crore bridge over the Bagmati at Dheng in Sitamarhi district.- PTI
