‘The BJP has proved that it is desperate’ State unit of the Congress for mid-term polls GULBARGA: Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly N. Dharam Singh on Tuesday criticised leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for blaming the Congress for the uncertainty prevailing in State politics and the fall of the seven-day-old BJP-Janata Dal (S) Government led by B.S. Yeddyurappa. Mr. Singh, who was here to participate in a religious function, took strong exception to the statements of BJP leaders, particularly those of State unit chief D.V. Sadananda Gowda, in this regard. By blaming the Congress for the present political situation, the BJP had proved that it was desperate, he said. The BJP leaders, because of their craze for power, had landed themselves in the present situation and, as such, the Congress could not be blamed. Referring to the statement of Mr. Sadananda Gowda against him and State Congress president M. Mallikarjun Kharge, he said that the BJP leaders seemed to have lost their mental balance. Fresh allianceAsked whether the party was in favour of working out a fresh alliance with the JD(S), Mr. Singh said that it was for the party high command to decide. He said he did not know whether leaders of both parties were making any efforts in that direction. Mr. Singh, however, said that the State unit of the Congress was in favour of mid-term polls. Asked whether he felt cheated when the move of the Janata Dal (S)-Congress to form a government in October failed, Mr. Singh refused to comment. On whether the BJP would earn public sympathy due to the refusal of support by the JD(S), Mr. Singh wondered how a party, whose leaders took oath without the presence of their coalition partner, would earn people’s sympathy. Mr. Singh further said that at no point of time had Mr. Yeddyurappa enjoyed majority in the Assembly. The BJP had violated the Constitution by assuming power with the support of only 79 MLAs. Even when Mr. Yeddyurappa sought a vote of confidence on November 19, not a single Janata Dal (S) MLA had supported him, Mr. Dharam Singh said.
