Officials told to comply with RTI Act

Penalty of Rs. 250 a day will be levied for non-compliance



Stressing compliance: Information Commissioner H.N. Krishna addressing officials at the office of the Deputy Commissioner in Hassan on Tuesday.

HASSAN: Information Commissioner H.N. Krishna, elaborating on various sections of the Right to Information Act, has advised officials to furnish details to applicants within 30 days of receiving applications.

Mr. Krishna said that in the earlier Act passed in 2000, an applicant was asked to give reasons for information sought, but the present Act did not require it. The applicant only has to pay the stipulated fee, he said.

He also directed the Deputy Commissioner to post one Public Information Officer and an Assistant Public Information Officer in each department.

He said that if an applicant did not receive the required information within 30 days, he could file a complaint to the Information Commission in Bangalore, where a hearing would be held.

On receipt of the complaint, the officer concerned would be summoned, and if the delay was found to be deliberate, he or she would have to pay a fine of Rs. 250 a day till the information was provided. Deputy Commissioner K.H. Aswathanarayana Gowda and zilla panchayat Chief Executive Officer F.R. Jamaadar were present. Assistant Commissioner of Sakleshpur Meena Nagaraj, Assistant Commissioner of Hassan Shivashankar, CMC Commissioner Gopalakrishna and Joint Director of Agriculture Mahesh Gowda were present.
