Drop in employment rate of physically challenged: study

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: In the decade that India has had a “landmark legislation” in place to promote the rights of persons with disabilities, the country has witnessed a five per cent drop in the employment rate of the physically challenged.

The consequent increase in the gap in employment between the disabled and non-disabled people, according to a World Bank report, “People with Disabilities in India: From Commitments to Outcomes,” is a cause for major concern.

The fall in the employment rate of working age disabled people from 42.7 per cent in 1991 to 37.6 per cent in 2002 was, as per the report, almost universal across the country and also widened for all education levels. Prepared at the request of the Indian government, the report explores the social and economic situation of a group that totals around 40 million people as per the most conservative of estimates.
