CPI(M) activist shot dead in Purulia

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: A Communist Party of India (Marxist) member, Sufal Mandi, was found murdered in the Balrampur area of West Bengal’s Purulia district early on Tuesday.

Mandi, a member of the party’s local committee, was called out of his house by a group of people late on Monday night and shot dead, the police said.

Second incident

This is the second incident of a CPI(M) leader being murdered in the district, allegedly by Maoists, within 20 days. It came a day after Maoists were suspected to have blown up a stretch of the railway track in the Andal-Sainthia route in Birbhum district.

The assailants might have belonged to a Maoist group from Dalma in Jharkhand, the State’s Home Secretary, Prasad Ranjan Ray, said here.

Mandi’s body was found on the final day of the 48-hour bandh in Jharkhand, Bihar, Orissa and West Bengal, called by the CPI (Maoist) in protest against the recent violence in Nandigram.

There was some tension in parts of Paschim Medinipur district considered strongholds of the Maoists in view of the bandh call.
