‘Eco-innovations need of the hour’

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: It is necessary to bring environment-friendly technologies from the niche market to mainstream and popularise its usage, said H.C. Sharatchandra, Chairman, Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB), on Tuesday.

“There are many eco-innovations in the market today which still need to be developed and marketed to its full potential,” he said at the Annual Prestige Environmental Seminar, organised by the Maini Group and Loughborough University. Dennis Loveday, head of Building Services Engineering group at Loughborough University, said that buildings were responsible for about 40 per cent of carbon emissions and the transport sector another 25 per cent.

In this scenario it is important to construct net zero energy buildings (structures that use renewable energy sources and do not add carbon dioxide to the atmosphere), he said. A. Ravindra, Deputy Chairman of the State Planning Board and Commission, in his speech on “Initiatives to improve environment in Bangalore region — role of private sector”, said that permissible noise levels in all areas of the city are being constantly breached.
