Noted microbiologist Subramanian dead

CHENNAI: Distinguished microbiologist and B.C.Roy awardee S. Subramanian died in a private hospital in Chennai after a brief illness. He was 84.

Considered by microbiologists as the ‘Father of Microbiology in South India,’ Prof. Subramanian was instrumental in starting the bacteriology department at Stanley Medical College and the Microbiology department in the Dr. AL Mudaliar Post Graduate Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, Madras University.

He also served as the lifetime Emeritus professor at the same Institute.

Born in Nagpur in 1923, Prof. Subramanian eventually moved to Madras to pursue his education in Sri Ramakrishna Mission High School and Pachaiyappa’s College.

He completed his post graduation in microbiology from Madras Medical College and continued to serve in India, turning down several lucrative offers in the United States and United Kingdom.

Areas of research

As an eminent microbiologist, his areas of research were primarily in the diagnosis and prevention of communicable disease and validating Indian Systems of Medicine.

He also served as the president of two national bodies of microbiologists — the Indian Association of Medical Microbiologists and the Indian Association of Biomedical Scientists. The B.C.Roy award was conferred on him in 1978.

The funeral will be held on Wednesday. He is survived by his wife Seethalakshmi, son Marthanda Venkatasubramanian and daughter Parvathavarthini.
