e-passports proposed for all by end of 2008

New Delhi: e-passports could be available to common people by the end of next year, depending on the viability of a pilot project introduced for diplomats and officials, the government has said.

Work on converting the existing diplomatic and official passports was progressing, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs was told on Tuesday. “…the government would take steps to implement the project on e- or biometric passports for all by the end of 2008,” it was told. — PTI
