Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Tuesday said that he was in agreement with the Prime Minister’s remarks on the need for restoring normality in the Nandigram area and shared his concern over the recent developments there. “What he [Dr. Singh] has said is right and I welcome it. I share his concern and the spirit [behind it],” the Chief Minister said, adding the State government would go about the suggestions. Earlier in the day, the two leaders discussed over the telephone the latest situation in the Nandigram area and steps taken to restore normality. Dr. Singh’s concern over the Nandigram developments were also shared by the State leadership of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Chief Minister too described the violence there as “unfortunate,” said Shyamal Chakravarty, member of the CPI(M)’s central committee. “We also want normality to be restored there but peace cannot be established within a day or two. It will take some more time,” Mr. Chakravarty said. “The whole area was in turmoil for 11 months. What is needed now is political initiatives; the State government is trying, so are we [the CPI(M)].” Mr. Chakravarty regretted that between 350 and 400 persons, who had to flee their homes, were still in camps.
