NEW DELHI: The Privileges Committee of the Rajya Sabha has decided to let off India’s Ambassador to the U.S. Ronen Sen with a “note of caution” for his reported comments against members of Parliament critical of the India-U.S. civil nuclear deal. A committee member told The Hindu that Mr. Sen was warned that this “lapse” on his part should not occur again and he should be more restrained in the use of language. A decision to this effect was finalised by the Privileges Committee of the Upper House on Tuesday at a meeting chaired by Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha K. Rehman Khan. The Committee took this view in the light of Mr. Sen’s unqualified and unconditional apology, offered first through a statement issued a day after his remarks created an uproar in Parliament and then in person before the Privileges Committees of the two Houses. Panel reportThe Rajya Sabha Privileges Committee is scheduled to present its report to Chairman Hamid Ansari on November 26. The report of the Lok Sabha Privileges Committee was submitted to Speaker Somnath Chatterjee on Tuesday. Mr. Sen appeared before the Lok Sabha Privileges Committee on October 29, and the Rajya Sabha Privileges Committee on November 2. During his deposition before the two Committees, he made it clear that he had “no excuses” for the kind of language reportedly used by him in a conversation with a representative of a web-based news agency.
