‘Examine validity of land acquisitions’

Panaji: The Association of Components of Communidades, a body representing the members of age-old traditional village land communes, has written to Chief Minister Digambar Kamat recently requesting him to appoint a commission to examine the validity of land acquisitions done by the State Government within the limits of autonomous villages of Communidades of Goa.

The Communidades are autonomous land communes which were set up during the erstwhile Portuguese rule in the State. They are facing intense pressure on their land resource from Government land acquisition on one hand and encroachment of land by vested interests and others armed with political influence.

The components are agitated over continued drain on the land belonging to the Communidades by the State in the name of industrialisation, tourism and now making land available to the investors in Special Economic Zones (SEZs) through acquisition by State-owned Goa Industrial Development Corporation.

The demand to examine the validity of these acquisitions has come up soon after the State Government’s decision to appoint a panel to study implications of the SEZs, presently mired in controversy.

The letter has been addressed by Andre Antonio Pereira, secretary of the association.
