CMC in illegal possession of wild animals

CAGED: A deer and a blackbuck kept in an enclosure at a park in Multani Dargah in Bidar.

BIDAR: The City Municipal Council (CMC) has some wild animals and birds in its possession in violation of the Wildlife Protection Act.

The animals and birds have been kept in enclosures at a park under its jurisdiction in Multani Darga area of the city.

They include a deer, a blackbuck, some rabbits, two peahens, a peacock and some pigeons.

Sources told The Hindu that the deer and the blackbuck were “rescued” and “gifted” to the park by some persons who had trapped the animals after they strayed into their premises.

The peahens were chicks when they were sold to the park authorities for Rs. 10.

The peacock had once strayed into a residential area and was found injured.

Later, it was treated for the injury.

Sources further said that the park also had a few other wild animals which met with a tragic end due to the poor conditions inside the park. The dead animals included a fox, some deer calves and a monkey.

The animals had not been given proper food.

It is said that the blackbuck has been kept chained in the enclosure for days together.

A source said that the animals were initially locked up inside a room and then shifted to the newly-constructed enclosures.

Earlier, the enclosures were in a dilapidated state and during rainy season, the animals had a tough time.

Forest officials said that possession of wild animals was an offence and action would be taken against the offenders.

The CMC officials were not available for comment.
