CLEANING DRIVE: Highways workers engaged in clearing debris along Ooty-Lovedale Road on Wednesday. Udhagamandalam: With the concern expressed by the people particularly commuters over the inexplicable delay in setting right public utilities damaged by the recent rain being highlighted in The Hindu recently, officials of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board and the Highways Department have swung into action to mitigate the sufferings of the people. Adverting to the delay in removing discarded high tension overhead wires from a narrow stretch of the Ooty-Lovedale road, the Executive Engineer, TNEB, T. Haldorai told The Hindu here on Wednesday that steps had been taken to remove the wires and set right the lines. Claiming that the delay was because of the debris of a mud slip on the stretch not being cleared, he said that the workers of the TNEB had been instructed to set right all the rain-damaged electric poles. The Assistant Engineer, Highways Department, Murugan said that work on clearing the debris of landslides especially on the Ooty-Kundah road had commenced. The clearance work had been kept pending owing to the wet condition of the debris. While manual removal of the mud, stones and uprooted trees was now in progress, machines would be pressed into service shortly. Meanwhile, commuters hoped that the forest department would start work soon on cutting the dangerous branches along the highway.
