KOLLAM: Member of the Kerala State Human Rights Commission S. Varghese has said that world peace is attainable if the United Nations’ declaration on human rights, adopted 60 years ago, is implemented. Inaugurating a seminar on ‘Human Rights: Problems and Prospects’ organised by the Punalur Sree Narayana College on Wednesday, Prof. Varghese said that the foundation of human rights was equality. In India, even though there is free and compulsory education up to the age of 14, child labour continues to be a major problem. Providing the basic necessities of life to the people is the responsibility of the government. He alleged that most local self government institutions lacked farsightedness in handling sanitation and environmental issues. Talking on the subject “Right to information: the basic human right,” Director of the State Literacy Mission N. Jayadevan, said that the democratic set-up in the country would become meaningful only if the Right to Information Act was implemented in letter and spirit. The peculiarity of this Act is that people themselves could implement it. Even corruption could be controlled through this Act, Dr. Jayadevan said. College principal P.G. Pradeep Kumar presided.
