Kakinada: The State bandh called by farmers’ unions to protest against the government’s alleged failure in ensuring Minimum Support Price (MSP) for paddy evoked poor response in East Godavari district on Wednesday. Farmers staged demonstrations at a few places with the help of the activists of the TDP, the BJP and the Left parties. However, normal life in urban areas was not hit as RTC buses plied as usual and banks and other business establishments functioned without any disruption. Movement of trains was smooth. The bandh had no impact in the district headquarters and there were token protests at the Collector’s office. The bandh had some impact in the Agency areas, where some government and private schools remained closed in anticipation of trouble from the agitators. Leaders of the opposition parties who participated in the agitation vowed to continue the stir till the government fulfilled the demand for MSP and remunerative prices for other crops. The police posted pickets at important places but there was no untoward incident. Superintendent of Police B. Srinivasulu monitored the situation. Rajahmundry: There was only partial response to the bandh. All shops and establishments functioned normally. The TDP Farmers’ Cell staged a rasta-roko at Kotipalli bus stand with only a few participating in it. CPI-ML (New Democracy) also took out a rally seeking MSP for paddy.
