New Director for Indian Institute of Advanced Study

SHIMLA: Professor Peter Ronald de Souza of Goa University has been appointed Director of the Indian Institute of Advanced Study here.

The post had been lying vacant for more than two years. Earlier, Prof. de Souza was working as a senior fellow at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies in New Delhi.

He was coordinating the State of Democracy in South Asia project and was director of “Lokniti” programme. Prof. de Souza, who has taught Political Science at Goa University for 16 years, was awarded the British Council visitor-ship to the U.K. where he made presentations at the London School of Economics and Warwick and Sussex University in 1992. In March 2000, he was Visiting Professor at Birkbeck College, London University, and thereafter a Visiting Scholar at the Taubman Centre, Kennedy School of Government, at Harvard University.

He is a member of the Editorial Committee of the Indian Council for Social Science Research survey on trends in political science and the Indian Journal of Social Science Review.

He was part of the team that did a review of Social Science Research Capacity in South Asia for the Social Science Research Council, New York. He has also worked as a consultant to the World Bank on Rural Decentralisation, to the Ford Foundation on local government in India, and to the International Institute of Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International-IDEA) in preparing their handbook on Democracy Assessment.

Prof. de Souza has several books and research articles to his credit. In recent years he has been examining issues of decentralised democracy in India and has published several articles on Panchayati Raj.
