This Day That Age
The Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly passed into law on November 20 the Andhra Dowry Prohibition Bill. Originally sponsored by Mr. A. Kaleswara Rao in the former Andhra Assembly, the Bill went through a Select Committee last year and emerged with radical changes. The Bill provides for the prohibition of dowry as consideration for marriage and for other matters relating thereto and applies to the whole State. Offences under the measure are non-cognisable and bailable. Punishment is imprisonment not exceeding six months or fine not exceeding Rs.1,000 or both.
