KOCHI: The World Spice Congress, one of the important events in global spice industry, is scheduled to take off in Goa in January 2008. Spices Board and All India Spices Exporters’ Forum are teaming up to organise the three-day event, scheduled from January 28. About 200 foreign delegates and over 300 from India are expected to participate in the biennial congress, which is held to discuss subjects of relevance to the global spice trade at large. In view of the recent developments in the areas of contaminants and significant changes in the legal and regulatory environment in most countries, the changes that can impact spices appear to be far reaching and challenging. A series of papers on these issues will be tabled on the first day of the congress. Speakers and topics on the first day include: Barbara Gallani from The British Retail Consortium – representing British/European retailers will touch upon issues facing spices in whole, ground, mixed forms or incorporated into food forms. Larry Keener - co-founder and co-chair of the Global Harmonisation Initiative, an organisation founded (2004) to promote harmonisation of food safety legislation and regulations worldwide, will deliberate on the need to build initiatives to harmonise food laws around the world. D.S. Chaddha from the Confederation of Indian Industry will elaborate on the new Common Food law being enacted in India and the new patterns of standards that will evolve in India. The second day will focus on issues of trade and commerce, crops and markets and trends in consumption and prices. Ian Hart from Public Ledger, a global commodity and agricultural crops/production and price tracking company, will present a paper on production of specific crops in various parts of the world, their price trends and the outlook in coming seasons. The World Spice Congress attracts participants from various constituents including policy-makers and regulators and the interaction provides a platform for formation of ideas for development of this business line.
