Mohit Mayur storms into two semifinals

BANGALORE: Top seed J. Mohit Mayur of Tamil Nadu stormed into the semifinals of both the boys’ under-14 and 16 singles in the Good Earth Super Series junior tennis championship at the KSLTA here on Wednesday.

Mayur posted a 6-1, 6-2 win over Arjun Kade of Maharashtra in the u-14 singles quarterfinals, but local lad Rashien Samuel, playing strongly from the baseline, tested his skills in the u-16 singles quarterfinals before Mayur prevailed 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 in a tie lasting nearly two hours.

Digvijay Singh of Himachal Pradesh and Ronit Bist of Delhi also entered the semifinals of both the u-14 and 16 singles, while in the girls’ section Sharon S. Paul of Tamil Nadu continued her good run, entering the semifinals of both the u-14 and 16 singles.

The results (all quarterfinals):

Boys: U-16 singles: S.V. Abhishek (AP) bt Shabaz Khan (Mah) 6-4, 7-6(4); J. Mohit Mayur (TN) bt Rashien Samuel (Kar) 6-3, 2-6, 7-5; Digvijay Singh (HP) bt Vinod Gowda (Kar) 6-1, 6-3; Ronit Bist (Del) bt Samip Mehta (Mah) 6-2, 6-3.

U-14 singles: J. Mohit Mayur bt Arjun Kade (Mah) 6-2, 6-4; Digvijay Singh bt Sharan Patil (Kar) 6-2, 6-4; Tushal Tavani (Mah) bt Surya Pavan (AP) 7-5, 3-6, 6-4; Ronit Bist bt R. Ram Kumar (TN) 6-0, 6-0.

Girls: U-16 singles: Nimisha Mohan (Kar) bt Sowjanya (AP) 6-4, 6-4; Ankita Raina (Guj) bt C. Rajeswari (TN) 6-2, 6-4; Rachita Sarda (Kar) bt Padmapriya (Kar) 6-1, 6-1; Sharon Paul (TN) bt P. Thombre (Mah) 6-1, 6-4.

U-14 singles: B. Sowjanya bt C. Nidhi (AP) 6-1, conceded; P. Thombre bt Amruth Mukherjee (WB) 6-1, 7-5; Sharon S. Paul bt Sansita Nandakumar 2-6, 6-1, 6-2; Ankita Raina bt Surya Tejeswani 6-0, 6-3.
