NEW DELHI: Defending champion Indian Oil suffered its second straight defeat, trounced 6-1 by Punjab and Sind Bank in Group ‘A’ of the super league in the Nehru hockey tournament at the Shivaji Stadium here on Wednesday. After Didar Singh put Indian Oil ahead in the 17th minute, Vikramjit Singh restored parity four minutes later through a penalty corner conversion. From then on, PSB called the tune. Vikramjit added two more goals, one off a penalty stroke and the other through a penalty corner while Parminder Singh (2) and Kulwinder Singh got the other goals. Indian Hockey Federation (U-21) team beat Border Security Force (BSF) 2-0 in a Group ‘B’ match with both goals coming close to half-time. A.B. Cheevanna and Deewakar Ram were the scorers. PNB posts winIn another Group ‘A’ match, Punjab National Bank beat Bharat Petroleum 3-1 to remain in contention after having lost its opening league match to PSB which is now all but assured of a semifinal place. BPCL, also with a one-win, one-loss record, will meet PSB on Thursday in its last league match. Jatinder Saroha (2) and Banmali scored for PNB while Sabu Varkey slotted in the lone goal for BPCL, two minutes from the interval to make it 1-2. — Special Correspondent
