Energetic: Actor A. Sreemathi lighting the lamp to inaugurate The Hindu Young World Fest at NMKRV College in Bangalore on Wednesday. BANGALORE: The annual inter-school literary and cultural event, The Hindu Young World Fest 2007, got off to a colourful start at the Mangala and Shashwathi Auditorium, NMKRV College in Jayanagar here on Wednesday. The three-day event, which is sponsored by Canara Bank, opened with the preliminary rounds of group dance and group music competitions. The energy of the performances inspired loud cheers from the audience. The cloudy sky clearly did not dampen the spirits of the children who had filled up the auditorium. Earlier, actor A. Sreemathi inaugurated the festival and, in her address, exhorted the children to be global citizens. She said that creativity and imagination were on the wane and told the students not to be couch potatoes. The inaugural function began with an invocation song by the students of Mirambika School, while the school choir of Baldwin Girls’ High School presented a Christmas carol. N. Rajashekar, Regional General Manager of The Hindu, welcomed the gathering and introduced the guests. Parvathi Menon, Chief of Bureau, The Hindu, and R. Sunil, Regional General Manager (Advertisement), were present. Selected teamsThe following teams have been selected for the finals, which will be held on Friday. Group dance (Indian popular/film): Florence Public School, R.T. Nagar; Stella Maris High School, Vyalikaval; Bishop Cotton Girls’ High School, St. Mark’s Road; and Poorna Pragna High School, Yelahanka New Town. Group dance (Western): Raghavendra High School, Vidyaranyanagar, and Navkis Educational Centre, Mathikere. Group music (Indian popular/film): Sri Vidya Mandir High School, Malleswaram; Auden High School, Banashankari; Florence Public School, R.T. Nagar; and The East-West School, Basavanagudi. Group music (Western): Baldwin Girls’ High School, Richmond Road; Sri Vidya Mandir Higher Primary School, Malleswaram; National Public School, Rajajinagar; and Sri Vidya Mandir High School, Malleswaram.
