NEW DELHI: A wide array of musicians from across the world, several of whom are household names, will attend the three-day Jazz Utsav beginning here on Friday.

To be organised at the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) auditorium on Tansen Marg, the festival since 1980s - when it was known as Jazz Yatra - has been one of the high points of the cultural calendar of both Delhi and Mumbai.

Previously the festivals had featured names like Sonny Rollins, Stephan Grappelli, Trilok Gurtu and Freddie Hubbard who had enthralled the audiences.

“The Utsav this year has an equally formidable global line-up with music presentations from the traditional players like the Chet Baker Tribute from Norway and Jake Fryer and the London Bebop Collective to the more contemporary ones like the Belgian vocalist Sascha Ley and the interesting Afro-Latin combine of Ba Banga Nyeck, a balafon player from Cote d’lvoire and Wanayran Angerer, a singer from Honduras. There are three Indian bands participating in the Utsav this year,” said former Attorney-General of India Soli J. Sorabjee, the man behind the big show.

The Utsav is organised keeping in mind the objective of promoting Jazz music and musicians in the country. The final day’s performances will be all-Indian, starring vocalist Ramamani and the Amit Heri Group, pianist Madhav Chari and his trio, and singer Sonia Saigal with her exciting band from Mumbai. Tickets priced at Rs.300 are available at Steakhouse (Jorbagh) and Music Shop (Khan Market) among other places in Delhi.
