KOCHI: Two crew members of an oil tanker which was being brought to anchor at the Cochin Port Trust’s North Tanker Berth were killed on Wednesday evening after the line connecting the tanker with the tug that was directing the vessel broke. The incident took place around 6.30 p.m. Port sources said that the line of the tug Kodungaloor broke and recoiled, following which two crew members of the tanker M/T Arun Kheterpal – Akilesh Kumar Jha and Ganesh Kumar Narottam Chauhan sustained serious injuries. The port’s mooring boat was brought alongside the vessel and the injured were transferred to it in stretchers. They were carried to an ambulance waiting at the Ernakulam wharf. Probe orderedTheir lives could not be saved despite being taken to hospital. An inquiry has been ordered into the incident, said the port chairman N Ramachandran. The tanker was safely anchored at the N.T. Berth, sources said. Jha is a native of Delhi and Chauhan is from Gujarat. The Harbour Police have registered a case. Hospital sources said that they were brought there at 7.15 pm with head injuries.
