Green lungs: The renovated traffic island on the Kowdiar-Golf Links road. THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Another green patch was added to the city when the renovated island park on the Kowdiar-Golf Links road was opened on Tuesday evening. The park has been beautified and named after former Mayor K. Gopala Pillai. A prominent leader of the Travancore State Congress, K. Gopala Pillai was Mayor during India’s independence from British rule. He passed away in December 1947 at the age of 45. Sports Minister M. Vijayakumar dedicated the park to the public at a function here. Mayor C. Jayan Babu presided over the meeting. V. Sivankutty, MLA; standing committee chairmen P. Harikumar, K. Rajasekharan Nair, K. Maheswaran Nair and G.R. Anil; ward councillor A. Sunilkumar; and Corporation engineer K.P. Mathew were present at the function. Great India Estate Private Limited would maintain the park for the next three years under an agreement with the Corporation. The park has been provided with a lawn, benches for visitors, flowerbeds, rockery and fountains. The Town Planning committee chairman said the beautification of the Bhagat Singh park at Poojappura and the Sri Chithira Tirunal park at East Fort were progressing.
