BROUGHT TO THE BOOK: Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) B.N.S. Reddy (right) presenting an accused, who posed as a Income Tax official, at a press conference in Bangalore on Wednesday. BANGALORE: The High Grounds police on Tuesday arrested two men who allegedly posed as Income Tax Department officials and attempted to fleece Satyam (50), owner of a paying guest hostel, of Rs. 20,000. The police gave the names of the arrested as Santosh Rajkumar, a resident of Ulsoor and a manager with a private insurance company on Mahatma Gandhi Road, and Sadanand, a resident of Malleswaram and an insurance agent with the same company. According to the police, the two men came to Ms. Satyam’s paying guest hostel on 5th Cross, Vasanathnagar, and introduced themselves as Income Tax officials. They told her she had not paid her income tax and demanded Rs. 20,000 to ensure that action was not taken against her. A scared Ms. Sathyam immediately telephoned her building owner Anish Kumar and briefed him the matter. Mr. Kumar rushed to the paying guest hostel and asked the two to show their identity cards. Fearing that they could be exposed, the two tried to escape on their motorcycle. Mr. Kumar, a yoga teacher, had no difficulty in catching Santosh but Sadanand fled on the two-wheeler, the police said.
