For making better leaders…

One of the top administrators of the Maharashtra Institute of Technology-School of Government (MIT-SOG), Pune, touted as Asia’s first institute for a career in politics, is right now in the Capital to invite political leaders to deliver guest lectures at the unique institution.

The founder and dean of the Institute, Rahul Vishwanath Karad, has been in talks with leaders like Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil, Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde and Member of Parliament Jyotiraditya Scindia to get them to interact with students of Master’s Diploma in Government.

In the past, too, many eminent politicians and bureaucrats like Communist Party of India secretary D. Raja, Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office Prithviraj Chavan, and senior BJP leaders L. K. Advani and M. Venkaiah Naidu have addressed the students.

“The School aims at nurturing a powerful leadership that can help India achieve the status of a superpower. We have created a platform for young men and women to assimilate and adopt the intricacies of government functioning. We feel it is necessary that a strong and skilful leadership emerges from among the youth with the ability to master the complex political scenario in the country,” says Mr. Karad.

“Senior and experienced national leaders are invited to share their wisdom with our students. Apart from our internal faculty, we make sure there are at least three such guest lectures every week,” he adds.

The School, set up in 2005, also organises national and international tours for the students. They are taken to big corporate houses, media offices, Vidhan Sabhas and Lok Sabha to get a first-hand understanding of their functioning. International study visits to various government organisations in Europe are also organised for them.

After completion of the one-year programme, the students work on attachments for two months with senior ministers and politicians.

At its meeting this past week, the Executive Council of Aligarh Muslim University decided to establish a new boys’ hostel for Other Backward Classes.

The Council has also accepted the transitory report of the Habibur Rahman Enquiry Committee investigating a reported incident of rape at Abdullah Hall on the campus.

“The Committee has found that the rape was never committed and that the report was entirely fabricated and baseless. It was part of a deep-rooted conspiracy to vitiate the academic atmosphere and create chaos on the campus,” said an official release by the University, adding that it had also recommended immediate revocation of disciplinary action taken against three University employees.

Eminent information technology expert and Vice-Chancellor of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Prof. K. K. Aggarwal has been elected vice-president of the prestigious South East Asia Regional Computer Confederation (SEARCC) for 2008-09 and president-elect for 2009-10.

Established in 1978, SEARCC is a confederation of non-political and non-profit making computer/information technology professional societies in the South East Asian region.

Prof. Aggarwal, who currently is president of the Computer Society of India, is widely recognised for his extensive work in the field of electronics and computer engineering.

The Culture Council of Delhi University and Kamala Nehru College will be hosting students of Government College University, Lahore, to stage theatre performances in the University.

Nineteen members of the Dramatics Club of the Pakistani university accompanied by some faculty members will arrive in Delhi early next week to stage two plays — “Amar Bail” and “Behen Bhai”.
