“Privatisation of sanitation in Govt. schools a necessity”

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Education Minister Arvinder Singh said on Wednesday that the Delhi Government had introduced privatisation of sanitation in the Capital’s government schools as there was an acute shortage of “safai karamcharis” due to a ban on recruitment in the government sector. However, he clarified, this would not affect the status of the sanitation staff already working in various schools and they would be redeployed in those government schools that had not been assigned to the private sanitation staff provider.

Better facilities

The Minister said the private sanitation staff had been introduced to provide better sanitation facilities to students in all the government schools. Also, he said, this was a cost-effective and potent way of taking care of sanitation and cleanliness in government schools.

Redeployment

As for the permanent sanitation workers, the Minister said, since they belong to the lower economic strata of society they will not be asked to work in far-flung areas of Delhi but will be redeployed in districts where they were already working before the introduction of private players.

Moreover, an internal mechanism would be put in place to provide a forum to those workers who feel aggrieved with posting or any decision of the directorate.

They would also be able to approach the authorities for seeking relief.
