Aims at 100 percent garbage clearance Special officers will be put in charge of wards GUNTUR: If one thinks maintenance of sanitation in the city is the realm of the sanitary inspectors and health officials of the Guntur Municipal Corporation, then they are in for a surprise. All the top rung officials, led by Municipal Commissioner will be part of a week-long special sanitation drive being launched from December 1 to cleanse the city. Municipal Commissioner Siddhartha Jain told The Hindu on Tuesday that the drive aims at achieving 100 per cent garbage collection from residential and commercial areas, silt free drains and getting rid of mosquito menace by using effectively using anti-larvae measures. Special officersSpecial officers will be put in charge of two to three wards and given power to sanction works worth Rs. 40,000 as part of the sanitation drive. All the officials, sanitary officers and even drivers of dumper placers had been given mobile phones for better coordination, he said. “We are confident of solving most of the pressing problems related to sanitation by involving all the top officials,” Mr. Jain said. A week-long special drive aimed to tackle the street dog menace has yielded good results with the GMC deporting about 800 dogs to the reserve forests in Bollapalli. The GMC has used another vehicle to deport the dogs in addition to the existing one. The Commissioner has effectively put an end to irregularities in the exercise, by ordering photographs of the dogs seized and taken by the contractor. The GMC pays Rs.11 for each dog. With new equipment coming to the city under the 12th Finance Commission funds mechanisation would put lesser pressure on requirement of manpower, he opined and that would give a leeway for deployment of people at the places hitherto unattended.
