Chief Minister rejects plea for property tax hike

Officials told to improve civic amenities

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy has asked the Municipal Administration Department officials to concentrate on improving civic amenities in urban areas instead of contemplating to hike property tax. He made this observation when Municipal Administration Director Pushpa Subrahmanyam informed him that five years passed since property tax was hiked. The Chief Minister on Tuesday reviewed the progress of various schemes launched in urban areas with Ms. Pushpa Subrahmanyam over telephone when he was told that property tax revision in residential areas would fetch Rs. 750 crore and it would be Rs. 200 crore in case of commercial establishments.

The Government had allotted Rs. 2,824 crore for strengthening of drinking water supply, sewerage, roads and other infrastructure under Urban Infrastructure Development Scheme for Small and Medium Towns and the department should utilise the funds to complete the pending works. Recalling that he had made promises on 344 issues during Rajiv Nagara Baata involving an estimated Rs. 823 crore, he said 224 promises of works worth Rs. 130 crore were completed so far while works on 61 issues involving Rs. 139.87 crore were under different stages of completion.

Stating that significant achievement had been made in enhancing the capacity of drinking water, he said 21 schemes for supply of 166 million litres a day with Rs. 263 crore were launched this year while the Government planned to spend Rs. 1,107 crore for ensuring supply of 459 million litres during the next financial year to ensure that the per capita water supply increased from the present 83 litres to 158 litres.
