Commissioning of Turamdih uranium plant in a fortnight

M.V. Subramanyam

THUMMALAPALLE (KADAPA): A new uranium mining plant will be commissioned at Turamdih in East Singhbum district in Jharkhand in a couple of weeks, according to Ramendra Gupta, Chairman of Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL).

Mr. Gupta told The Hindu that the uranium mining and processing plant at Bagjata, Jharkhand, would be commissioned in 2008.

He said the plant proposed in Pedagattu-Lambapur area in Nalgonda district is held up with the appellate authority on objections filed by environmental groups. The High Court has dismissed a petition opposing the project, he said. UCIL is awaiting the appellate authority’s ruling, he added. Final clearances from the Ministry of Environment and Forests are for the Rs. 800-crore Mamawthaba uranium mill in Meghalaya and the uranium mine in Nongstin in Meghalaya.
