MADURAI: A ‘sound and light’ laser show has been proposed at the Meenkashi Sundareswarar Temple here.
A three-member team from India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) conducted a preliminary assessment of the temple premises on Wednesday and identified three sites for the proposed show.
The proposal was mooted by District Collector S. S. Jawahar, who wrote to the State Government. Acting on instructions from the government, the temple authorities had sought assistance from ITDC, said B. Raja, Joint Commissioner, Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department, and Executive Officer of the temple.
The ITDC team, led by Deputy General Manager (South) E. Vijayakumar, has chosen the Golden Lotus Tank as the site for the laser show with a water screen.
“We are considering using wireless technology headphones for the audience rather than the conventional loudspeakers. The spectators will have a choice of six languages — English, Hindi, Tamil, French, German and Bengali,” said Mr. Vijayakumar.
If the project materialised, Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple would be the first temple in India to have such a show, he added
For the remaining two sites — North-East Adi Street junction and Thousand Pillar Hall — ordinary ‘sound and light’ show is being considered.
30 minutes duration
The script would be prepared by the temple authorities for the show, the duration of which would be 30 minutes. It would mostly be on ‘Tiruvilayadalpuranam’ along with the history of temple, its period of construction and structural beauty, said Mr. Raja.
