Haryana posts win

Principal Correspondent

GURGAON: Host Haryana and defending champion Jharkhand scored hard-fought wins in the first set of quarterfinal league matches here as the 44th junior National football championship resumed after a day’s rest at the end of the league stage.

Carrying on with its superb form, Haryana defended its citadel well against a strong Mizoram before winning by a solitary goal in Group ‘A’ at the Devi Lal Sports Stadium.

Tushar Chaudhary struck in the 30th minute to give Haryana a respite after Mizoram, the three-time runner-up, had put up a good challenge.

But Haryana rode on to the experience of the three international players in its side to stave off any threat.

In the same group, Jharkhand defeated Bihar 2-0 in yet another closely-contested match. The two teams tried hard to break in the first-half, but moves fizzled out.

Jharkhand moved ahead through Prem Kumar Gamei’s 59th minute strike. With five minutes remaining, S.K. Mustakin struck the second goal as Jharkhand proved too strong for the hard-working Bihar.

Bengal cruises

At Faridabad, favourites Bengal cruised to a 3-0 win over Assam with R. Lalrindika scoring twice, once on either side of the half.

Dipankar Sarkar had put Bengal ahead in the 30th minute as Assam found it difficult to penetrate into Bengal defence. Lalrindika scored in the injury time in the first half and then completed the tally when he fired in the 70th minute.

Thursday is a rest day.

The results: Quarterfinal league: Bengal 3 (Dipankar Sarkar 30, R. Lalrindika 45+, 70) bt Assam 0; Orissa 1 (Tatun Das 44) bt Karnataka 0; Haryana 1 (Tushar Chaudhary 30) bt Mizoram 0; Jharkhand 2 (Prem Kumar Gamei 59, S. K. Mustakin 85) bt Bihar 0.
