Lions Club to provide vocational training to youth

TAMBARAM: The Lions Club will be focussing more on providing vocational training to youth and improving healthcare in Chennai city and its fringes, Mahendra Amarasuriya, International President of District 324 A6 of the club, said on Tuesday.
Though Tamil Nadu was among the leading States in both healthcare and education, certain sections of society continued to be deprived of quality facilities in the two sectors.
The IT industry had grown phenomenally in the State, yet many youth, particularly those in rural areas, were unable to get good jobs in this field.
It is against this backdrop that the Lions Club would be starting vocational centres to impart quality computer education and training to youth,
School block opened
Mr. Amarasuriya told reporters at Sri Ramakrishna Matriculation Higher Secondary School, West Tambaram, after dedicating the Melvin Jones Block at the school.
After the tsunami, the Lions Club had raised US $ 15 million for relief and rehabilitation, US $ 9 million was spent in Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu, which bore the brunt of the tsunami in 2004.
Mr. Amarasuriya began the day’s schedule by first visiting the Lions Academy for Blind, an internationally sponsored project in Medavakkam.
In Tambaram, he was accompanied by Tambaram MLA S.R. Raja, Tambaram Municipal Chairman E. Mani and Lions Club members from various regions of the city and suburbs.
Later, he visited Srimathi Ramkunwar Devi Fomra Vivekananda Vidyalaya, Chromepet, and Mukkaala Nammalwar Vivekananda Vidyalaya, Kunrathur, where he dedicated new buildings.
