Moozhikulam Sala, an eco-group in the city, is trying to awaken public conscience in ways it knows better. Through poetry and music. On Saturday, the sala is organising a get-together to bring the contrasting elements of Pournami (full moon), Karthika, Bengal and Nandigram together. The evening, to be held at the sala’s eco shop at Kurian Towers, opposite Savitha Theatre, will begin with singing of the Kathakali song Ajita hare …, which will be a tribute to Kalamandalam Sankaran Embranthiri, who immortalised the song by his rendering. This will be followed by a recital of the poem Bengal that K.G. Sankara Pillai wrote in 1972. The poem, written in the backdrop of the Naxalbari movement, is still relevant, as it is about the “angst of humanity.” The poem is a conversation in which Sanjaya describes the situation of Bengal to the blind king Drith arashtra. It ends on a dark note, with the king asking San jaya what else is to be heard. The heard news is terrible, un heard could be even worse … After the poem, the evening will progress to an interaction with a couple of persons who visited Nandigram after the unrest broke out. The get-together will end with a couple of light songs. Anand Haridas
