PUTTAPARTHI: The beginning of general and super speciality hospitals of Sri Satya Sai Central Trust at Puttaparthi and at Whitefield in Bangalore had a humble beginning inspired by a mother’s wish to help the poor women and children, who were denied basic medical care in the drought prone area, here 53 years back.
It was on the wish of his mother that Eeswaramma Satya Saibaba had vowed to provide free medical care to the poor, particularly women and children, by laying foundation stone to a 8-bed hospital in November 1954.
In 1956 the then Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Bezawada Gopalakrishna Reddy inaugurated the hospital in the place of present 100-bed general hospital here.
The general hospital here now had all basic departments like women and child, ENT, dental, ophthalmology, cardiac, urology and others.
About 1,000 patients visit the hospital every day on an average for medical intervention.
Better facilities
Not satisfied with the medical facilities offered at the general hospital Saibaba wished to help the poor better further and setting up the super speciality hospital in 1991. Urology and nephrology department were started in 1992, ophthalmology in 1994, orthopaedic in 2006 and cosmetology in September this year.
The general and super speciality hospitals in Bangalore were set up in 1998.
For the benefit of poor who fail to frequent to Puttaparthi a mobile hospital visits the surrounding villages to extend continuous treatment as well as supply medicines.
