Energetic: Children performing at the ‘My School Rocks’ dance competition in Bangalore on Thursday. Bangalore: Kids just want to have fun and nothing was more apparent than the event at the Chowdaiah Memorial Hall in the city on Thursday, which was packed with youngsters out to demonstrate their dancing talents. They were all trying their luck at being featured in the Disney Channel and being part of a music video choreographed by Shiamak Davar. Well, it is not like all the children were ace dancers, in fact some of them looked like they had never shaken a leg on stage before, but it was their confidence levels and enthusiasm that were contagious and prompted the audience to cheer them on. Bollywood influence seemed to be abundant and children were seen doing the “matkas” and “jhatkas.” The event was Disney’s “My School Rocks” an all India inter-school dance competition inspired by the channel’s original movie “High School Musical 2.” Children from over 50 schools in Bangalore participated in the auditions being held in the city and their performances will be pitted against children from schools in Chandigarh, Hyderabad, Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Lucknow and Kolkata. In all, 1,000 schools from these eight cities are participating in the competition. “The first High School Musical movie was a huge hit, and the characters have become something of an icon for children. The sequel, due for premiering in India in December, carries forward the same theme as the first — “Follow your dreams and express yourself” and the competition is also around the same theme. The children were asked to create their own choreographed pieces for the Hindi soundtrack of the movie and three inspired songs in Hindi created by musicians Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. The children enjoyed the performance put up by youngsters from the Shiamak Davar Institute of Performing Arts. Eight finalists will be selected by Mr. Davar and their choreographed pieces will feature on the channel. The winning school team chosen by an audience poll and Mr. Davar’s points will get an opportunity to star in a music video arranged by him on one of the songs from the movie.
