Kozhikode, of course, loves its non-vegetarian food, but the city’s eating habits change substantially once the Sabarimala pilgrimage season begins. Ask any proprietor of non-vegetarian restaurants in the city. “Our sales have already dropped by 30 per cent since November 17 (first day of Malayalam month Vrishchikam),” says Sumesh Govind, restaurateur. Predictably, those who run vegetarian hotels in the city are happy. “Our sales improve drastically during the season,” says Lukose Thomas, manager of a vegetarian restaurant on one of the busy streets in the city. “Besides the pilgrims coming from places such as Bangalore, residents also frequent our restaurant more during this time. And we do make some special dishes for the season.” It is not just people who go vegetarian at this time — some non-vegetarian restaurants also turn pure vegetarian. “Only small restaurants do that, and they are forced to do that to survive,” Sumesh says.
