THANJAVUR: National Integration Day was celebrated at Oriental School at Thanjavur on Monday. School president V. Rajappa presided over the function. A portrait of Indira Gandhi was unveiled and uniforms, donated by the school governing body member K. Padmanabhan, were distributed to students. Governing body vice-president S. Thyagaraja Sharma said that there was a general misconception that Sanskrit had lost its linguistic glory. There was also a feeling that it was the language of gods and belonged to a particular community, he said. But the school has dispelled that misconception and has popularised the language among people, irrespective of their religious affiliations. Sanskrit is a compulsory subject for all. Sanskrit is their first language and these students have won distinction and State ranks in public examinations being held by the State Government.
