“Managements have agreed to follow the Fee Commission guidelines” “Fee structure issue can be taken up at the next panel meet” PUDUCHERRY: The territorial administration on Thursday cautioned the managements of private medical colleges against collecting excess fee from students. “We have given strict instruction to the managements to adhere to the fee fixed by the government. The government will not hesitate to take action if any violation is brought to its notice,” Health Minister E. Valsaraj said after discussing the issue with the representatives of college managements. At the meeting chaired by Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, the management representatives were told to either refund the excess fee collected or adjust the amount against the next year’s fee. Terming the outcome of the meeting as “highly fruitful,” he said the managements had agreed to follow the instructions and in future agreed to stick to the fee structure fixed by the Fees Committee. “If the managements are not satisfied with the fee structure, they can take it up with the committee when it meets next year ,” Mr. Valsaraj said. The meeting was held against the backdrop of allegations against most of the private medical colleges with regard to collection of excess fees. Some political parties and parents of some students had given representations to the government seeking action against the erring colleges. The committee had fixed Rs.1,50,000 as tuition fee and Rs.40,000 as other fees for Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute, Rs.1,50,000 as tuition fee and Rs.35,000 as other fees for Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College and Rs.1,75,000 as tuition fee and Rs.53,000 as other fees for Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences. For Vinayaga Mission Medical College, Karaikal, and Arupadaivedu Medical College, the committee had fixed Rs.1,75,000 as tuition fee. While for Lakshminarayana Medical College, the committee had fixed Rs.1,50,000 as tuition fee and Rs.40,000 as other fee, the tuition fee for Vengateswara Medical College had been fixed at Rs.1,50,000. The Health Minister said parents could bring to the notice of the department in case the colleges charged excess fees.
