College to adopt model villages in Tirupattur, train youth in farming

Staff Reporter

TIRUPATTUR: Sri Nandhanam College of Engineering and Technology, Tirupattur, has planned to lay more emphasis on Research and Development as a step to enhance students’ acumen towards research excellence. It will formulate schemes under Providing Urban Amenities in Rural Areas (PURA) and emphasise using non-convention energy sources, college chairman P.M.M. Nandagopal told reporters here on Thursday.

The college formed a Research and Development Cell and planned a Centre for Sustainable Rural Development, Mr. Nandagopal said.

The college would adopt model villages in Tirupattur and train the youth in agriculture, which had been approved by the Ministry of Agriculture. Steps had been taken to involve self-help groups in Tirupattur by inculcating awareness and training in computer technology. The schemes would be broadcasted through FM Radio covering Tirupattur and other villages.

Biogas plant

E.Vidyasagaran, Senior Scientist, said that the college had decided to give more emphasis on research related activities. The college had proposed to set up a biogas plant on the campus at a cost of Rs.10 lakh. The institution also proposed to take on lease a 50-acre land for cultivation of Jetropha to produce bio-diesel.

Further, one of the buildings in the college would be fully electrified through solar photovoltaic applications.

The students would be involved in all the projects. A workshop on renewable energy resources would be held in February 2008, Mr. Vidyasagaran said.

Farm machinery

Apart from this, 26 students of BE (Mechanical), 3rd semester, would be attending a training programme in farm machinery and equipment at Anandapur in Andhra Pradesh from December 24 to January 4.

H. Shankaran, Dean and Director, College of Management Studies, said that in June 2008, an exclusive business school would be started.

Mr. Nandagopal said that the college planned to introduce engineering courses in the fields of Information Technology and nano science.

Already activities to generate these fields have been initiated. Five faculty members had attended a programme in Chandigarh from November 12 to 17.
