The tribal leader was hanged to death by the British Memorial to the martyr sought BERHAMPUR: One hundred and eighth birth anniversary of Sahid Laxman Nayak was celebrated on Thursday at the Berhampur circle jail, where he was hanged by the British regime 65 years ago. This great tribal leader of south Orissa was punished with death sentence by the British government for his efforts to unite the tribals of undivided Koraput district against the foreign rule. At early morning dignitaries of the city, members of Berhampur municipal council, jail and police officials led by Ganjam district Collector V.K.Pandian reached the jail to pay tribute to the martyr. They visited the condemned cell where he was kept before he was hanged to pay respect to his portrait kept there. Later his idol outside the jail was also garlanded and a public meeting was held on the spot in memory of the martyr. Speakers in their speeches elaborated how a common tribal, Nayak, had become a major catalyst of freedom movement in south Orissa. The collector declared that the new over bridge being built up near the jail would be named after the martyr. He urged the jail authorities to build up a memorial consisting of memorabilia related to martyr at his cell, which could be visited by students. A function was held at the Sahid Laxman Nayak Memorial High School in the city.
