Komul extends shelf life of surplus milk

FOR GOOD LIFE: A view of the ultra high temperature equipment installed at Komul plant in Kolar.

KOLAR: Kolar Milk Union Ltd., well-known as Komul, an apex body of milk producers’ cooperative societies, having jurisdiction over Kolar and Chickaballapur districts, has introduced modern technology to manage excess milk and supply quality milk to customers.

In association with the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) and Tetra Pack India Pvt. Ltd., Komul has installed ultra high temperature (UHT) machine to preserve the milk from spoiling and supply the customers good quality milk.

About 6.70 lakh litres of milk is produced daily in the region.

After supplying to the market, thousands of litres of milk remain unsold. To preserve this milk, Komul has gone for ultra modern technology at its dairy here.

Komul is the first dairy to adopt such technology in the State. Under UHT technology, milk will be boiled for four seconds under 135 degrees temperature.

This will destroy the bacteria in the milk without affecting vitamins and proteins. This milk can survive for three months in normal temperature.

After pasteurisation the milk at above mentioned temperature, it will be packed in a six-layer sachet. This protects the milk from humidity and sunlight. This milk can survive for 90 days in room temperature.

When durable milk under this technology was introduced for the first time in Karnataka, with brand name “Goodlife” by Komul, customers were attracted towards it.

There was growing demand from neighbouring States like Andhra Pradesh, Goa, and Kerala.

At present, UHT plant produces 40,000 litres of “Good Life” milk. Spurred by the growing demand, Komul plans to increase the output to one lakh litres, its chairman Kadenahalli N. Nagaraj told The Hindu.

A packing machine, with a capacity of 7,000 packets per hour, was being installed in the plant, he added.
