‘Strengthen unionism’
BANGALORE: Giving the presidential address of the inaugural session, All India Defence Employees’ Federation (AIDEF) president S.N. Pathak predicted “dark days” ahead for trade unionism. He said the political parties and government functionaries were not concerned about the welfare of the working class. Citing the example of cutting the Provident Fund interest from 12 to 8 per cent by the Finance Ministry, Mr. Pathak said each worker who had served for not less than 30 years would lose Rs. 1.25 lakh at the end of his service because of this cut. Jayamahal MLA Roshan Baig, who inaugurated the golden jubilee celebrations, said the globalisation had weakened the labour movement which was not a good development. Michael Fernandes, C. Srikumar, Dipankar Mukherjee, and A.D. Nagpal addressed the gathering. — Special Correspondent
