Ariyalur, a district again

It is seen as a boost for development

Map of Ariyalur district.

The issue of the Government Order a couple of days ago, bifurcating the Perambalur district and carving out a Ariyalur district with Ariyalur as district headquarters, is looked upon as yet another step towards development of this backward district.

The new district, with a geographical extent of 1,939.31 sq. km, will be carved out on November 23 and will comprise the Ariyalur, Sendurai and Udayarpalayam taluks. The geographical extent of Ariyalur taluk is 681.19 sq. km; Sendurai 314.82 sq. km; and Udayarpalayam 943.30 sq. km.

A land of limestone and noted for fossil deposits, Ariyalur and its surrounding areas are dotted with cement factories, including the Tamil Nadu State Cement Corporation-owned Arasu Cements factory.

The formation of the district had witnessed a series of turmoil, with the change in government from time to time.

The initiative for bifurcation of the district was taken by the then DMK-led government in December 1999.

On completion of preliminary works through the appointment of a Special Officer, the district came into being on January 1, 2001.

However, the then AIADMK-led government, citing economic measures, ordered the merger of Ariyalur district with the Perambalur with effect from April 18, 2002.

Several agitations were launched by traders, political parties and service organisations.

The decision to restore the district status for Ariyalur was taken by the Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.

The new district will have three Assembly constituencies – Ariyalur, Andimadam and Jayamkondam with a total electorate strength of 4,54,078.

A boon

Service organisations, traders and political leaders look upon the bifurcation as a catalyst for industrial, educational and economic development of Ariyalur and surrounding areas.

The 1,500 MW capacities Jayamkondam Lignite Power Project (JLPP) which is expected to be commissioned in a few years will help develop the industrial scenario of the district.

Although the Government Arts College in Ariyalur has been catering to the educational needs of students, there has been dearth of government industrial training institutes. The Department of Technical Education started a Government ITI at Andimadam which has been temporarily housed in a private rice mill.

The State Government has posted V. M. Xavier Chrisso Nayagam, till now Secretary of State Election Commission, as the District Collector.

Local Administration Minister M. K. Stalin will inaugurate the new district at a function to be held in Ariyalur today.
