Elephants driven away from village

Staff Correspondent

Vigil against people disturbing them

The animals strayed into Nerlapura on Wednesday

Efforts on to take them back to Savandurga forests

TUMKUR: The police and Forest Department personnel drove a herd of five elephants away from Nerlapura, near here, on Thursday.

The elephants had strayed into the village on Wednesday night.

The police reached the village in the night and kept vigil against people disturbing the animals.

With the help of the Forest Department personnel, the police drove the elephants away from the village in a four-hour operation.

The authorities, however, lost sight of the elephants in the evening.

A forest official was quoted as saying that the elephants were allowed to traverse a distance of 4 km without any disturbance.

The elephants, probably, went into the Shivaganga hill ranges.

According to the official, “We will continue to keep vigil and try to drive them back into the Savandurga forests from where they may have strayed.”

Villagers said the elephants traversed through their fields which had standing ragi crop. “However, there was not much destruction,” they said.

Tough time

K.N. Dharmendra, Circle Inspector of Police, who camped in the village, said the police had a tough time in managing the crowds that had gathered to have a glimpse of the wild animals.
