Special Correspondent
TIRUPATI: The temple city of Tirupati, which has emerged as a major educational hub with half-a-dozen university colleges and a host of professional institutes, business schools, etc. will soon have the distinction of being the second place in the world to have a statue of scientist Albert Einstein.
Thanks to the initiative of Jana Vignana Vedika (JVV), an affiliate of the All-India People’s Science Network, the 9-ft tall bronze statue will be erected at S.V. Arts College junction on the university road here. It will be formally unveiled by Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on December 6. The life-size statue has been exquisitely chiselled in Kothapeta in W. Godavari district by sculptor P.V. Rama Rao.
The highlight of the entire project is that of the Rs.10 lakh spent on making the statue, Rs. 2.5 lakh was mobilised by 25,000 students. Mannem Venkatrami Reddy, president of committee constituted by the JVV for the purpose, says that installation of Einstein’s statue in the college zone will go a long way in inspiring students and the younger generation to develop a scientific temper. The JVV team, led by its district president Chaya Mohan, received the statue and are busy making arrangements for its installation.
